What Affects Family Photography Cost?
Family photography pricing isn't random. A few things explain why one photographer charges a few hundred dollars and another charges close to $1,000 or more for what looks like a similar session.
Photographer experience.
I've spent 17 years photographing people. Experience affects how efficiently a photographer works with children, handles posing, finds good light, manages different family combinations, and creates consistent final images.
Most families aren't professional models, and you shouldn't be expected to know what to do before the session starts. I guide families through posing and different setups throughout the session.
Session length.
Longer sessions can provide more time to work through poses, family combinations, outfit changes, or different setups, but more time doesn't automatically mean better photographs.
The right amount of time depends on the family and what you're trying to create.
Number of finished images.
This is often one of the biggest factors in your total cost. A photographer whose base price includes five images may look less expensive upfront than one who includes 20 or the entire gallery.
Before booking, find out exactly how many finished images are included and what additional portraits cost.
Studio vs. outdoor sessions.
Studio and outdoor family sessions require different types of planning.
A studio provides greater control over lighting and weather. Outdoor sessions may require location planning, travel, weather considerations, and choosing the right time of day for the available light.
Neither option is automatically better. The best choice depends on the type of portraits you want.
Immediate vs. extended family size.
A session with two parents and one child takes less organization than one with grandparents, several households, spouses, and grandchildren.
Larger groups usually mean more combinations to photograph, which may affect session planning, timing, and pricing depending on the photographer.
How Family Photographers Structure Their Pricing
Most family photographers use one of a few pricing structures:
Session fee + à la carte images: you pay a session fee, then purchase the individual images you want. This is how I price my family photography sessions at My Canvas Portraits.
Packages: a flat price that includes a set number of images, prints, or other products.
All-inclusive galleries: one price covers the session and most or all of the finished images.
None of these is automatically the cheaper option.
A $150 session fee may sound affordable until images cost $75 each and you want ten of them. A $600 all-inclusive price may sound expensive until you compare it with what ten individual images would cost elsewhere.
When you compare photographers, look at your total expected investment, the session fee plus the portraits you'll actually want, rather than only the starting price shown on the website.
How Much Does a 1-Hour Family Photo Session Cost?
This is one of the most common pricing questions, but it's also one of the most misleading ways to compare photographers.
Session length alone doesn't determine your total cost.
Two photographers can both offer a one-hour family session and still leave you paying very different amounts once digital images, prints, or other products are added.
At My Canvas Portraits, I don't bill family sessions by the hour.
The $100 session fee covers the photography session itself. I work with your family through poses, different family combinations, and setups without making the session feel like you're racing against a stopwatch.
Your total cost comes down primarily to which portraits you choose afterward, not simply how many minutes the session lasts.
How Much Do Extended Family Portraits Cost?
Extended family sessions with grandparents, siblings, in-laws, cousins, and multiple households usually require more planning than a session with parents and their children.
More people also means more combinations worth photographing.
That may include:
The entire family together
Each individual household
Grandparents with grandchildren
Adult siblings
Couples

Here's exactly how my family photography pricing works:
Session fee: $100. This covers the photography session itself. I guide your family through poses, different family combinations, and multiple setups.
Retouched digital portraits: $55 each. After your session, you view the images and choose only the portraits you want. Each selected portrait is professionally retouched and delivered as a high-resolution digital image.
Full digital gallery: $500. If you love a larger number of your images, you can purchase the full finished gallery.
