When Should You Book Graduation Photos?

Book your graduation photos as early as you can.

Six months ahead is not too early if you want a better choice of dates and enough time to actually plan the session.

But if graduation is two weeks away and you're just now thinking about pictures, still reach out.

Life happens.

The biggest thing to understand is this:

The day you book your photographer and the day you take your graduation pictures are two different things.

Booking early gives you more time to plan. The actual session date can be based on when you need the photos, your schedule, your graduation plans, and what makes the most sense for you.

When to Book Graduation Photos: My Recommendation

Six Months Ahead Is Not Too Early

If you know graduation is coming, you can start planning now.

You don't need to have every detail figured out yet. Your outfit might not be picked.

You may not have your cap and gown. You may still be deciding between a studio session and something outdoors.

That's fine.

Booking early gives you a better choice of dates and keeps you from scrambling once graduation season gets busy.

Six to Eight Weeks Gives You Good Planning Room

If six months feels early, six to eight weeks before your target session date is still a solid window.

That gives us time to work through things like:

• Your session date

• Outfits

• Cap, gown, cords, and stole

• Props

• Location

• Weather backup plans

• Any ideas you want to include

The goal is not just getting something on the calendar.

It's having enough time to build a session that actually feels like you.

Only One or Two Weeks Left? Still Reach Out

If you're down to the wire, call anyway.

Your options might be tighter, but I'm not going to tell you it's automatically too late because graduation is close.

Why Booking Early Gives You a Better Game Plan

This is where booking early really helps.

The more lead time we have, the more room there is to figure out:

• The date that works best

• Outfits, cap, gown, and stole

• Props or personal details

• Where the session should happen

• A backup plan if the weather doesn't cooperate

• Deadlines for announcements

• More involved concepts or themes

You spent years working toward graduation.

Your session deserves more planning than squeezing it into whatever time is left before the ceremony.

When Should You Actually Take Graduation Photos?

Booking early does not mean you need to take your pictures six months before graduation.

You can book your photographer early without needing every detail of the session figured out yet.

The best session date depends on what you need the photos for.

Think about:

• When you need photos for announcements

• Whether you're having a graduation party

• Your ceremony date

• When your cap and gown will be available

• Your school and work schedule

• Family schedules

If you need the photos for something specific, work backward from that deadline.

For example, if you need finished pictures for graduation announcements, the session needs to happen early enough that you're not trying to handle pictures, announcements, and graduation plans all at once.

Studio sessions can also give you more flexibility if outdoor timing or weather becomes an issue.

Why I Wouldn't Schedule Your Session on Graduation Day

Graduation day already has enough going on.

Family may be in town. Friends have plans. There may be a party later. Everybody is watching the clock.

Trying to squeeze a full professional session into that same day can turn the photos into something you're rushing through instead of enjoying.

When you can, give the photography its own day.

You can still take quick pictures with family on graduation day, but I would rather give your full session enough time to actually focus on you.

High School Seniors and College Graduates Are a Little Different

High School Seniors

For high school seniors, I recommend taking your senior and graduation pictures before graduation.

There's more to photograph than the diploma.

Your senior year might include:

• Sports

• Clubs

• School activities

• Personal interests

• Your style

• Things that were a big part of your final year

Once graduation happens, that part of your life starts changing pretty quickly.

I'd rather photograph it while you're still in it.

College Graduates

College graduates have more flexibility.

If taking your pictures after commencement works better for your schedule, that's completely fine.

You didn't miss some deadline just because the ceremony already happened.

Sometimes waiting until after graduation can actually make the session easier because you're no longer trying to juggle finals, family, ceremonies, parties, and everything else happening at the same time.

Don't Wait Just Because You Don't Have Everything Figured Out

You don't need the whole photo shoot planned before you reach out.

That's part of what I'm here for.

You can come to me knowing:

“I'm graduating, I want great pictures, and I don't really know what I want yet.”

We can start there.

Booking earlier just gives us more time to build the plan together instead of rushing it.
